American Tatyana McFadden finished second in the women’s race, after racing in Chicago on Sunday.

The 2021 Boston Marathon saw a Swiss sweep in the wheelchair division, as Marcel Hug won the men’s race and Manuela Schär won the women’s race.

Despite making a wrong turn just before the finish line, Hug still dominated the race. He was on pace to break the 1:18:04 course record he set in 2017, but the mistake cost him about 20 seconds on his finish. “We really didn’t know what to expect going into this,” Romanchuk said of the double after the race. “Tried to fuel and rehydrate as fast as I could. Hopefully we won't have to do this again.”Schär established a sizable early lead in the women’s wheelchair race by attacking the downhills early. By 5K, the Boston course record-holder was more than a minute ahead of McFadden. She reached halfway in 44:10, while McFadden came through the split in 49:28.

Because Schär didn’t race in Chicago yesterday, she was fresher from the start, which allowed her to attack the early downhills.
