The World Health Organisation has declared that an outbreak of the viral infection mpox in Africa is a public health emergency of international concern.
What is mpox, how does it spread and what are the levels of infection like in Ireland at the moment? Here is everything you need to know about the virus.Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus. In November 2022 the WHO began using the term mpox rather than monkeypox to address concerns about stigmatisation as the virus does not actually come from monkeys.
Initial symptoms for those infected include headaches, muscle pains, and exhaustion, followed by more severe symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and rash, which causes lesions on the face, hands, and feet. The virus can be fatal. Previous outbreaks of the virus have notably been among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, with the pattern of transmission linked to close skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity.
