THE POLICE constabulary which employed the killers of George Floyd was today condemned by the federal Justice Department of America.

It found that the police department who employed Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of Floyd’s murder in 2020, routinely used excessive force, including “unjustified deadly force” and that Black people suffering mental ill-health were particularly vulnerable to being shot. The report found that Minneapolis police commonly used weapons and deadly force against citizens who had committed petty offences, “and sometimes no offence at all”, and police patrols were different in nature between Black and White neighbourhoods.

The findings back up the call by anti-racist campaigners such as Black Lives Matter that Chauvin killed Floyd because he believed the system would protect him.
