Micheál Martin said the payments to put pets up in hotels was only 'one aspect' of the country's response to the Ukraine crisis, which 'reflected the best of what we are as a people'
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has defended government spending of up to €1 million a month on accommodation for the pets of Ukrainian refugees after an Irish Mirror investigation was raised in the Dáil.
The findings of the Irish Mirror’s investigation were raised in the Dáil on Thursday by Clare TD Michael McNamara, who had described the spending as “ridiculous” and said the Government was “taking the p**s out of taxpayers”. The Tánaiste defended the expenditure, insisting that there was “a context at the time” and that it was only “one aspect” of a humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis “that reflected the best of what we are as a people”.
“Okay, we all responded in a humanitarian way at the time. No one believed the war would go on for two years.
