Tánaiste Micheál Martin has defended government spending of up to €1 million a month on accommodation for the pets of Ukrainian refugees after an Irish Mirror investigation was raised in the Dáil.

The findings of the Irish Mirror’s investigation were raised in the Dáil on Thursday by Clare TD Michael McNamara, who had described the spending as “ridiculous” and said the Government was “taking the p**s out of taxpayers”. The Tánaiste defended the expenditure, insisting that there was “a context at the time” and that it was only “one aspect” of a humanitarian response to the Ukraine crisis “that reflected the best of what we are as a people”.
