Tánaiste Micheál Martin has effectively ruled out the prospect of Fianna Fáil entering government with Sinn Féin after the next general election. In his strongest response yet to repeated questions on whether his party would consider entering power with Mary Lou McDonald’s party, Mr Martin said, “I’ve told you no”.

He stated he was “taken aback” by the party’s proposals, describing them as regressive and having the potential to “damage the prospects of first-time buyers to buy a house”. Asked by the Irish Mirror if these policies meant that Fianna Fáil would not go into Government with Sinn Féin, Mr Martin said he could not see the situation arising. “That policy is incompatible with Fianna Fáil housing policy,” he said. “We will be developing a further enhancement of our existing policies on housing. I don't see Fianna Fáil going into government with Sinn Féin. We want to lead the next government. That's a matter for the Irish people in terms of ultimately who they vote for. “But I believe in the economic model we have. What you're beginning to see in terms of the Sinn Féin policy today is breaking from that economic model, with some of their proposals. “Sinn Féin has said that this is a failed state. Sinn Féin has consistently been against the economic model that we have championed over 50 years. I’m talking about free trade, the strong role for the market, pro-enterprise government and pro-economic activity entrepreneurial activity. “Sinn Féin are very reluctant travellers in terms of that economic model, have criticised it more often than not.
