Ireland tighthead prop Tadhg Furlong has been ruled out of their Six Nations opener against England due to a recurring calf injury. Connacht's uncapped Jack Aungier has been called up to the Ireland senior squad as Furlong's replacement.

Murray Kinsella Reports from Quinta do Lago IRELAND TIGHTHEAD PROP Tadhg Furlong has been ruled out of Ireland’s Six Nations opener against England in Dublin due to a recurrence of his calf injury.

The press of the Irish squad will continue their camp in Portugal in the coming days before returning to Dublin on Wednesday. The experienced tighthead finally made his return to action in Leinster’s Champions Cup win away to La Rochelle on 12 January but was then absent from the province’s matchday 23 against Bath the following weekend.

26-year-old Connacht tighthead Aungier first broke through with his native Leinster before making the move west in 2020. He impressed on the Emerging Ireland tour of South Africa last year and has earned his first call-up to the senior squad.
