US Speaker Nancy Pelosi has left Taiwan after a brief but controversial visit.
But on the other, it also maintains a "robust unofficial" relationship with the island, which includes selling weapons for Taiwan to defend itself. President Tsai Ing-wen said Taiwan is facing "deliberately heightened military threats", adding that it "would not back down and that Taiwan will do whatever it takes to strengthen its self-defence capabilities".
Crowds gathered early outside Taiwan's parliament on Wednesday, hoping to get a glimpse of Ms Pelosi as she came out."China is bluffing," said a 70-year-old man. "It may retaliate in the short term, but if Beijing over-reacts, it will be punished by the United States."
