Irish jockey Michael O’Sullivan has tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a fall at Thurles ten days prior. The 25-year-old was riding Wee Charlie for trainer Gerard O’Leary on February 6th when he was one of three riders involved in a fall at the final fence of a two-mile handicap chase. O'Sullivan received immediate medical attention on the track before being airlifted to the hospital where he remained in intensive care until his passing.

This morning, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) released a statement on behalf of the O'Sullivan family, confirming the young jockey's death. The IHRB expressed their deepest condolences to Michael's family, partner, friends, colleagues in the weighing room, and the wider racing community. Dr. Jennifer Pugh, Chief Medical Officer of the IHRB, shared that O'Sullivan passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday morning surrounded by his loved ones at Cork University Hospital. Dr. Pugh praised the medical teams who provided exceptional care to O'Sullivan both at the racecourse and in the hospital.Adding a poignant note, Dr. Pugh revealed that O'Sullivan's family made the selfless decision to donate his organs during this difficult time, a choice that will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of other patients and their families. Dr. Pugh personally expressed her sadness at O'Sullivan's passing, highlighting his dedication, humility, and kind nature that made him a pleasure to be around. She believes his success and humility will continue to inspire many.Darragh O’Loughlin, CEO of the IHRB, shared the sentiment of immense loss felt throughout the racing community. He described O'Sullivan as an exceptionally talented young rider who was widely beloved in the weighing room. O'Loughlin extended his heartfelt condolences to O'Sullivan's family, particularly his parents, Bernadette and William, and his brother, Alan, who will undoubtedly feel his loss most deeply. O'Sullivan's career skyrocketed in 2023 when he achieved victory in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham aboard Marine Nationale. He also tasted Grade One glory with Barry Connell's charge at Fairyhouse. He went on to secure another win at Cheltenham that year, completing an opening-day double by taking the Fred Winter with Jazzy Matty for Gordon Elliott. The Connell-trained and owned Good Land also achieved a Grade One victory under O'Sullivan at the 2023 Dublin Racing Festival.
