The Fianna Fáil leader also appeared to effectively dismiss suggestions that Ireland would succumb to another request to put forward the names of a male and female candidate for the EU Commissioner job.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has ruled out the prospect of an early general election as he insisted that by-elections “don’t hold any fears” for him. He also effectively dismissed the prospect of sending a male and a female candidate for the European Commissioner role, as previously requested by Ursula von der Leyen.
Speaking in the RDS as he celebrated Fianna Fáil MEP hopeful Barry Andrews topping the poll in Dublin, Mr Martin dismissed the idea that there should be no by-elections. Asked if the Government should press ahead with a by-election during the summer, the Tánaiste said “we settle down now for a while” as they “need to govern”.
Following the last European elections, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked for a male and a female candidate. Mr Martin appeared to reject the idea that Ireland would succumb to such requests this time around.
