EU leaders will this afternoon discuss the unfolding crisis in the Middle East at a meeting of the European Council.
The meeting was convened by President of the council Charles Michel in an effort to secure a united response from the EU.Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Varadkar said:"It's vital for the leaders of the European Union to set out our common position and establish a unified course of action.
"We will repeat our strong support for Israel in the wake of the brutal terrorist attacks which occurred on their soil, and re-emphasise our condemnation of Hamas. "Under international law, Israel has a right to defend itself, but it must do so within the parameters of international humanitarian law."
Yesterday President Michael D Higgins criticised the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen for comments on the Middle East conflict which she made on a visit to Israel last Friday.
