Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has stated Ireland is experiencing an “evident” rise in racism as he denied that hate crime legislation is “wokeism”.
He explained: “I think what the Commissioner has said, I don't want to interpret his words, but I picked up what he said was that we haven't had the growth of the far right to the extent that has been the case in other European countries, where you regularly see far right parties electing members to Parliament, even getting into government.
The proposed legislation has been criticised in some quarters, with some insisting that it is an attempt to limit freedom of expression. “Then people actually using violence against people who are of a different colour or of a different ethnic background. That's a matter of real concern.
