Mr Harris said: 'The Government has made it clear, the three parties in Government and our Programme for Government in terms of a review in relation to the pandemic, I think that's a sensible thing to do'

Research from the Society of Actuaries in Ireland found just 52 of those occurred in 2020. Lockdown was imposed in March of that year. Boffins calculated that 1,026 more people died in 2021 than would have been expected – when compared with the three-year window before the Covid-19 pandemic. They said this signalled the coronavirus had a bigger impact on mortality patterns during the second year of the outbreak.

Society of Actuaries in Ireland’s Linda Daly said: “So, while we accept that there was additional deaths from Covid-related issues, there was lesser deaths for other issues such as car accidents, respiratory flus, and on balance, there was broadly no excess deaths in 2020.” Ms Daly, who was one of the authors of the study, also believed more lax Government restrictions in the latter half of 2021 played a role in the spike.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said the Government intends to hold an inquiry into the Covid-19 pandemic before the next General Election. The Fine Gael leader said the terms of reference will be published in the next few weeks.
