Taoiseach Micheál Martin will meet UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Liverpool this Wednesday evening for a new annual "UK-Ireland summit". It comes amid a "refresh" in relations between Ireland and the UK following the Labour Party’s victory in last summer’s General Election.
It comes a week before Mr Martin’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in the White House in Washington DC next Wednesday. Mr Starmer met Mr Trump last week, with sources saying that the UK PM is likely to brief the Taoiseach on the contents of their discussions.As part of the programme, the Taoiseach and the Prime Minister will co-host a reception on Wednesday evening, celebrating "cultural linkages between Britain and Ireland." There will be a roundtable on Thursday morning, with several businesses in the tech, energy, construction, and manufacturing sectors operating within and across the UK and Ireland in attendance. The summit plenary meeting will take place on Thursday and will be attended by Tánaiste Simon Harris, Education Minister Helen McEntee, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and Transport and Energy Minister Darragh O’Brien. At the summit, the Taoiseach and Prime Minister will agree on a wide-ranging programme of new and enhanced strategic cooperation between Ireland and the UK to be taken forward by both Governments through to 2030. Mr Martin said: "This summit is one of the most significant bilateral engagements between the British and Irish Governments in a generation and shows the resolve of Prime Minister Keir Starmer and I to put in place the building blocks to bring strategic cooperation between our two countries to a new level. "I am keen now that we work in partnership on a structured and ongoing basis to realise the full potential of the British-Irish relationship across a comprehensive programme of cooperation, including on infrastructure delivery, opportunities for SMEs, marine planning, energy, education and culture."
