ASTI General Secretary Kieran Christie said there had been 'a deplorable lack of consultation with stakeholders and with representatives of teachers' in relation to the proposal
A proposal to suspend career breaks in order to address the shortage of teachers is"another cosmetic measure floated by the minister", according to the Association of Secondary Teachers, Ireland .
Mr Christie said it was positive that it was simply just a proposal at this stage, but added that regardless of this, those considering going on a career break would do so as they are determined to do so anyway."There is a lack of clear thinking around these proposals," he added. He said the majority of teachers were on such breaks"to cover family leave in the absence of a publicly-funded childcare model".
He added that the teacher supply crisis was long in the making, stemming from issues such pay disparity, as well as the housing crisis.
