Teachers Sound Alarm Over Nicotine Pouches' Rise Among Teens
NICOTINE POUCHESTEENAGERSHEALTH RISKS

Teachers in Ireland are raising concerns about the growing popularity of nicotine pouches among teenagers, due to their lack of age restrictions and potential health risks.

Teachers in Ireland are expressing growing concern about the increasing use of nicotine pouches among teenagers. These pouches, similar to snus but without tobacco, are currently unregulated and available to all ages, despite manufacturers' recommendations against use by individuals under 18. The pouches, which contain varying levels of nicotine from 4mg to 11mg, are placed under the lip to deliver a nicotine hit.

Sold in tins of 24 pouches for around €5, they come in various flavors like mint and citrus. A 6mg pouch, for instance, is roughly equivalent to the nicotine content of one cigarette. Paul Crone, Director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, highlights the concerning trend of athletes and influencers promoting these products, leading teenagers to perceive them as harmless. Crone emphasizes the lack of awareness among students regarding the potential long-term health consequences of nicotine use. He believes they mistakenly equate the absence of tar with safety, failing to recognize the inherent risks. The lack of visible smoke or vapor makes it challenging to gauge the prevalence of nicotine pouch use among students, unlike traditional smoking or vaping. Crone calls on the HSE to issue a health advisory notice on these nicotine pouches, highlighting the need for increased awareness and regulation in the face of this growing concern. He stresses that the current loophole, stemming from the absence of tobacco, allows for unrestricted sale and use, posing a significant risk to young people
