Teachers in Ireland are raising concerns about the growing popularity of nicotine pouches among teenagers. These pouches, which deliver nicotine without containing tobacco, are currently unregulated and available to anyone without an age restriction. While manufacturers advise against use by those under 18, they are readily accessible in shops and garages, prompting fears about their potential impact on young people's health.
Director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, Paul Crone, highlighted the concerning trend, stating that students are unaware of the long-term health risks associated with nicotine pouches. They perceive them as less harmful than traditional cigarettes or vaping due to the absence of tar, a common misconception. Crone expressed his worry that the lack of visible smoke or vapor makes it difficult to gauge the extent of their use among students. He emphasized the need for a health advisory notice from the HSE to inform teenagers about the potential dangers of these products.Another pressing issue is the lack of legal restrictions on the sale of nicotine pouches. Crone explained that the current legislation in Ireland focuses on tobacco products, leaving nicotine-containing pouches in a legal gray area. He urged the HSE to address this loophole and implement measures to protect young people from the potential harms of these addictive products. The HSE has been contacted for comment
