This tech startup wants to bring shape-shifting and crash avoidance to motorcycles:

) say that in production versions, the system will be adjustable on the fly across the full range of motion, allowing riders to set up specific bar/peg/seat combos that fit just right for a variety of riding scenarios. Currently, reconfiguring the ergonomics on most motorcycles requires partial disassembly, buying parts and then getting them to fit correctly - something that can be problematic. The Midas bike with VRG makes it easy.

But the Damon team has taken on the challenge anyway and the kitted out Yosemite Yamaha I rode in actual traffic had several useful tech helpers on board, including blind-spot warnings, following distance warning and collision warnings. There was also a video screen showing a wide-angle view of what was behind the bike via a rear-mounted camera. You could say it was AWSoMe.

And while I like the idea of being able to see everything behind me while riding , I'm not sure putting a video screen on a bike's handlebars is the best idea, as it goes against the whole ethos of keeping your eyes up and on the road, and sure enough, I kept glancing down at the screen while riding. But in their new promo video , Damon shows the video overlaid with speed and other data, a configuration that's common in cars with GPS maps and so on. It could be a workable compromise.

Most current motorcycle riders today would likely recoil in horror at the mere suggestion some built-in robot take over the controls of their beloved machines, and it's a fair guess to say that while the more passive warning systems may eventually appear on bikes, it's going to be a while before the general riding public is willing to turn over actual control of such a highly unstable mode of transport to a series of ones and zeros.
