Underage rally champion and car builder Luca Callaghan was tragically killed in an incident in Achill
The 17-year-old killed in an early morning road traffic collision near Keel, Achill, Co Mayo has been named locally as a rising rally star and talented motorsports enthusiast.
One person who knew Luca well said: "When 15 year old Luca Callaghan from Achill, dragged his Mam to spectate at their first Autocross in 2022, he knew nothing about rallying except that he loved it. Since then Luca has helped out at every event; set up, clean up and marshalling. Luca entered the Mayo Motorsport Autocross 2023, and despite a broken driveshaft through no fault of his own, he still took first in class. Luca's family were elated, giving great credit to local businesspeople Damien McGreal and Maridam Ltd. for giving Luca the means to upgrade his homemade machine.
Funeral details will follow later. The road traffic incident occurred shortly before 1am on Monday 13 January along the R319 at Keel. The road was closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators examined the scene as Gardaí appealed for video footage, including from dash-cams, of the area around the time of the incident.
"The road at the scene is currently closed to all traffic, affecting access to areas on Achill Island west of Keel. Garda Forensic Collision Investigators have been notified and a report will be sent to the local Coroner.
