Jac Sexton, 19, passed away earlier this week, months after an initial diagnosis of an ear infection turned out to be something more sinister

A 19-year-old has died just months after headaches initially diagnosed as an ear infection turned out to be a rare and aggressive brain tumour.

Doctors were initially stunned as Jac staged a remarkable recovery they “had not seen in 30 years” of medicine, but his brain tumour remained and claimed his life on February 25, 2025. The cause of death was a diffused glioblastoma. Jac passed away in his mother’s living room in Aberdare, surrounded by close friends and family.

The following day, Jac went to the doctor, where he was told he had an ear infection, thought to be a side effect of the glandular fever he had suffered over the previous summer. Returning the next day, however, a second doctor referred him for a CT scan two weeks from then, but his symptoms continued to worsen.

When Jac reached Prince Charles Hospital, doctors said his condition was critical. They expected that the lack of oxygen would have caused swelling of the brain, a deadly outcome given the size of the tumour. Jac was then transferred to Noah’s Arc Cancer Centre, a centre that provides palliative care for children with life-threatening illnesses, at the University Hospital of Wales. He remained there for five weeks from January until early February this year.

A friend set up a GoFundMe page when Jac fell ill with a target of £1,000, but it has already surpassed £13,000. “The aim is now to promote Jac’s story and raise as much as we can,” Rhydian explained.
