A 16-year-old boy will be sentenced in the new year for the murder of a woman on her way home from work in Dublin city centre almost two years ago.
The Central Criminal Court heard of what was described as the"irreparable loss" suffered by the husband and children of 49-year-old Urantsetseg Tserendorj who died nine days after she was stabbed by the boy.
The boy's grandmother told the court Ms Tserendorj’s husband and children were in her family’s prayers and the pain of watching her husband over the past two years had brought them to their knees on several occasions. The court also heard the boy had written a letter to Ms Tserendorj’s husband in which he said he never set out to hurt his wife.
He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but was found guilty by a jury of murder after a second trial earlier this year. The boy was 14 when he killed Ms Tserendorj and because he is still a child the normal mandatory sentence of life in prison does not apply. The court will hear further submissions about the kind of sentence that should be imposed in January.
