Manchester United announced on Monday that Mason Greenwood would be leaving the club, despite manager Erik ten Hag reportedly being in favour of the former England international's return

Erik ten Hag refused to give his opinion after Manchester United confirmed that Mason Greenwood will leave the club.

In February of this year, Greenwood had charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February. That prompted the Red Devils to conduct their own internal investigation and after facing public backlash when it was reported that the 21-year-old was preparing to returning to action, United U-turned and decided to arrange for him to leave.

"I only have statements about our performance, our squad, where we have to improve. Because it's clear, we have to improve. I have to put every effort in to get the team to perform. The club will assist Greenwood in getting his career back on track, as CEO Richard Arnold explained in an open letter to supporters. "Although we have decided that Mason will seek to rebuild his career away from Manchester United, that does not signal the end of this matter," Arnold, who's been criticised for his role in the decision-making process, wrote.
