Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Tehran and other cities to protest against the US, after its air strike killed a top Iranian commander in Baghdad this morning.
Iran's supreme leader has vowed "severe revenge" after the US killed the commander of the Quds Force. Gen Soleimani was one of the most popular figures in Iran and seen as a deadly adversary by the US and its allies. After the attack, US President Donald Trump tweeted an image of the American flag, without any caption.— Donald J. Trump January 3, 2020 He later tweeted again to say that Iran never lost a negotiation. Meanwhile, US politicians said they were not told in advance of the attack.
The strike conducted in Iraq "went forward with no notification or consultation with Congress," House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Eliot Engel said in a statement. Several Democrats, including the party's 2020 presidential frontrunner Joe Biden, the former vice president, have warned that the targeted killing could bring US forces dramatically closer towards an armed conflict with Iran.
He was referring to Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of the powerful Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary force, who died in the strike along with General Soleimani. Iran, China and Russia held joint naval drills in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman last week and the Iranian foreign minister visited Beijing earlier this week.
