is recalling 594,717 vehicles because the boombox function that allows music to be played externally may mask the required pedestrian warning noises., recalled are some 2020-2022 Model Y, Model X and Model S vehicles and 2017-2022 Model 3 vehicles.
The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard calls for “minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.” The boombox on the Tesla allows sound to be played through an external speaker while the vehicles is in motion. That may obscure the pedestrian warning system sound. According to the NHTSA, Tesla will update the software “that will disable the Boombox functionality when the vehicles in in drive, neutral and reverse modes” free of charge.Boombox also will be disabled in vehicles when “Summon” or “Smart Summon” is in use. Those are optional driver features that allow the user to move the vehicle in and out of parking spaces while standing outside of it.
