DUNCANVILLE — Ignoring his opponents in the Republican primary, Gov. Greg Abbott told voters Tuesday that reelecting him would assure the defeat of former...
The governor is expected to win the March 1 GOP primary, so he’s taking aim at Democrat O’Rourke, his likely rival in the general election.
“You know me. I’m never going to take anything for granted,” Abbott said after his Duncanville speech. “Texans want a proven leader who’s created more jobs than any other governor has created during their tenure as governor, but also someone who is fighting for the education of their kids and safety of their kids.”
Attacking O’Rourke and fighting against socialism are designed to motivate Republican voters and cast Abbott as a champion of conservatism. His Republican opponents insist that, though Abbott dismisses that criticism. On Tuesday O’Rourke was in Houston, where he ended his 20-city swing designed to highlight the anniversary of last year’s winter storm that left millions without power statewide.
