Texas running back Jonathon Brooks figures to be in for a bigger workload in the Alamo Bowl with Roschon Johnson and Bijan Robinson both opting out of the game.AUSTIN — With Texas leading Kansas 38-0 in the third quarter back on Nov. 19, the day’s work was done for veteran running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson. At that point, it was time to unfasten their chinstraps, relax and watch the next man up get some run in.Brooks rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.

“Brooks is a real smooth guy,” Johnson said after Texas’ 55-14 win over Kansas. “Just the cuts that he can make, it’s very smooth and it's real fluid. It's not really choppy. And he's deceptively fast. He’s more of a long-strider, he covers ground. He’s definitely a guy that just does things effortlessly, which is pretty hard to do at the running back position.”

Well, Johnson and Robinson have both declared for the 2023 NFL draft and opted out of playing against No. 12 Washington in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. So for the first time since his record-setting days at Hallettsville, Brooks is in line to be Texas’ featured back in a postseason game that will double as an audition for next year’s newly vacant position as RB1.

In the six career games Brooks has touched the ball, he's amassed 322 yards and five touchdowns on 45 carries. While the sample size is small, averaging 7.2 yards per carry is no easy feat at any level.During the regular season the 6-foot, 202-pound Brooks forced seven missed tackles and averaged 5.79 yards after contact, the second-most among Big 12 backs with at least 20 carries.
