Joaquin Castro is seeking to protect from deportation migrants who survived the sweltering heat of a tractor-trailer abandoned near San Antonio.
They urged Mayorkas to exercise prosecutorial discretion to keep those survivors from being deported or sent to a detention facility. In the wake of the tragedy, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state police to inspect trucks from Mexico andimmigration and border policies. Abbott has said Border Patrol agents did not inspect the truck carrying Mexican and Central American migrants because of a lack of manpower.
