The AthleticIn college basketball circles, the widespread and cynical view after Texas elevated Terry to acting coach was this: He simply was not a shiny enough name to get the full-time gig. That Chris Del Conte was a big-game hunter. That the school would want to answer a disaster with a massive counterpunch. Unless Terry forced everyone’s hand by taking the Longhorns to the Final Four, there was no way.Well, Terry finished one step short of the Final Four.
Honestly, yes, it’s still a little surprising Texas didn’t wait it out, just in case some marquee names demonstrated interest. Because it’s Texas. But Terry earned the opportunity. And if we dip into that cynicism again, he’s not getting a lifetime contract. He can prove himself now and for the long term, or Texas can do this all over again in a few years. —Texas will play top-level defense under its new permanent head coach, because that’s what Rodney Terry teams do. He can coach at that end.
Which brings us to Rodney Terry the recruiter. Those who know him insist he’s borderline obsessive on that front. He’ll have to be. Texas is one of the most fertile recruiting turfs in the country — if not right at the top — and it’s a bonus that Terry knows the state intimately. But everyone else recruits Texas, too. The Longhorns don’t get first dibs. With a future in the SEC on the horizon, Terry and his staff have to recruit as well as anyone in the sport, to maintain top-notch results.
Fairly or unfairly, people will be waiting to see if Terry benefitted from a singularly connected group of old heads in 2022-23, or if Texas’ season was just an appetizer for what things will look like under his watch. — After leaving UTEP to be part of Beard’s staff in 2021, Terry guided the Longhorns through the tumultuous midseason coaching change and led them to their second Big 12 conference title. Prior to 2023, Texas had not even reached the Sweet Sixteen since 2008.
