Thalidomide is a drug that was first produced in Germany in 1953, by the pharmaceutical company The Grünenthal Group.
However, the drug was later shown not to be safe for pregnant women, as it caused severe damage to the foetuses of those who took it, causing their babies to be born with physical disabilities. When was it recalled? According to the Irish Thalidomide Association , the drug's effects were discovered by an Australian Doctor, who noticed an alarming increase in babies being born with such disabilities to mothers who had been taking the drug.
“The States' failure to publicly announce the withdrawal of Thalidomide or account for any supplies sitting in homes around Ireland resulted in other needlessly affected babies being born up to and including 1964”According to ITA chairperson Fionnola Cassidy, of the 100,000 babies born with the effects of Thalidomide, 90,000 died as miscarriages. Of the 10,000 survivors, 5,000 died within the first year.
