are the same group of scrappy young men that flirted with us from the tip of the indie landfill iceberg about dancefloors and mardy bums. But their seventh album found Arctic Monkeys swooningly glamorous and musically theatrical. This is downtempo, with rarely a chorus to speak of, and with Alex Turner more serious than ever, although he hasn’t lost his sense of humour completely.
It’s full of melancholy, has lots of old Hollywood influences, and you can almost see Turner spot lit in a speakeasy lounge, clutching a grilled microphone for dear life while the rest of the band play stony-faced behind him. Gorgeous.It is always a worry that after two good albums, a band might screw it up with their third as they tire of what has come before. Dublin’s Fontaines seem to just get better.
This record is a lasagne of feelings. You can take these songs as questions about your own place in the world physically, geographically or metaphysically – Fontaines are in constant conversation with themselves about their own truths. But if that sounds heavy and obscure, the songs themselves are not. Nothing here is hard to get into, even with the frequent allusions to Ireland’s history, and what it means for the country now. It glowers, and it’s brilliant.
