A RTÉ insider reports that the comedy duo The 2 Johnnies could be the next big star for Friday nights, potentially replacing the longrunning chat show The Late Late Show while the network seeks fresh entertainment for the prime slot. Comedy duo The 2 Johnnies have the potential to take over a Friday prime time slot with talks of the Tipp lads getting more airtime, on top of their podcast and musicare rumoured to be in contention for a Friday prime-time slot, as an insider has reportedly said it's what the national broadcaster "desperately needs".
RTÉ bosses are reported to be "leaning more and more towards scrapping the iconic chat show, which was the first-ever talk show in the country, in its entirety and totally reimagining Friday night entertainment.
""There’s talk in here that the success of The 2 Johnnies is what Friday nights need," revealed a station insider. The comedy duo is made up of 'Johnny Smacks' McMahon and John 'Johnny B' O'Brien, who have worked together on television, podcasting, and music projects. Patrick's lack of clarity on whether he will return has sparked debate across the nation, with endless predictions about who might fit the iconic role.
RTE’s director general has previously said he would "love" to keep Patrick Kielty as the host of The Late Late Show, while defending extra payments to the star.
"It’s kind of thought now that Patrick won’t be returning, and with the Late Late supposed to be returning in two months’ time, nobody is still none the wiser," said the insider. The show's team is due back at work next month to begin the 64th season of the long-running chat show.
