‘Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U' reveals that even her fashion has a deeper message.
Before the wild success of “drivers license”, it was actually a song that got zero attention that changed Olivia Rodrigo’s life. When she posted “happier” online, it got “no likes” and she was critical of her singing on it, wondering why she posted it at all. But she had a “gut feeling” to keep it up. Producer Dan Nigro discovered the track, messaged her telling her that he loved it and that they should work together.
Take “jealousy, jealousy”: sung under a highway in ’00s Avril Lavigne-esque pop-rock video style, it brings out more of that sonic inspiration, while Rodrigo’s rendition of “1 step forward, 3 steps back” on acoustic guitar instead of piano draws out its country roots. In others, the setting enhances the concept, like the deathly heartbreak of “favourite crime” performed in the ruins of a tomb-like stage.
There are further glimpses into her past relationship and heartbreak – Rodrigo shares tidbits such as how she wrote “1 step forward, 3 steps back” the day before she split up with her ex. Beyond the album, you hear how being a coddled child star first sparked her trust issues, and her complicated feelings around her sudden success.
