The Algarve is perfect for all kinds of holiday makers including sporty types and architecture enthusiasts
From bustling towns to secluded beaches, the Algarve has much to offer, particularly for those seeking an activity holiday.
Our guides from PT Active Tours took us along part of the 220km Ecovia trail which stretches from the west to the east of the Algarve. One the places we stopped at was Cacela Velha, a charming whitewashed village with cobbled streets, where no new houses can be built. Our guide Felipe answered our many questions, pointed out some of the native plants, including almond and carob trees and taught us a few words of Portuguese.
Our next stop was the Magnolia Hotel in the Quinta Do Lago resort, a former motel now transformed into an upmarket hotel. Palm weaving is another traditional skill mainly practiced by older local women which is also being revived. Apparently, the town is very busy at the weekend with many market-goers selling their wares but it was peaceful when we visited.
A sauna session and a back and leg massage proved to be the perfect tonic after all the cycling and walking!Sagres is a hugely popular surfing destination and the weather was perfect, a balmy 17C.
