The amazing story of a (very) high speed funeral.

Was it a hot lap? A victory lap? A funeral service? It was all three and then some.

John Weinberger raced cars. Lisa didn’t even know how to work a stick shift, but he got her some track training at Bondurant and then bought her a 1972 Toyota Celica race car that had once belonged to Janet Guthrie, the first woman ever to compete in the Daytona 500 and Indy 500. For the next roughly 25 years, John and Lisa raced vintage cars together at tracks across the nation. Lisa blew up a couple motors over that time, and her husband made trophies for her out of spent engine pieces.

She started looking at funeral homes. The couple was based in both Austin, Texas, and Chicago. Lisa found a funeral home in Austin that had a surprising note on its website—the home could hold a funeral at the Circuit of the Americas. So she called the place. “They had a notice saying they did this, but they’d never actually had a funeral at COTA,” she recalls. She figured: This would be perfect for a pandemic funeral.

When we got to the Esses, I took them as fast as I could. You could hear the casket in back kind of going caddy-wompus.
