In addition to the forest’s staggering biodiversity containing ten percent of the world’s total species, the mass tree dieback would release up to 90 billion tons of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, making the hurdle of limiting climate change even more difficult to overcome. The new research makes it clear that the Amazon is standing on the brink of disaster.
