Brick by Lego brick, this artist is painstakingly recreating North Park

The hobby began as a family activity with his 8-year-old son Augie and 10-year-old daughter Peach. “It was a good activity to take up some time,” Smith said. “We were building a lot of stuff, even before the pandemic, but it was really just from sets. It wasn’t until this at-home time that I was looking for a creative outlet.”They began by using their Lego creations to “visit” some of the places they missed going during the pandemic, starting with Tribute Pizza, the family’s favorite restaurant.

Lyons’ mom reached out to ask if she could purchase the miniature, but Smith declined. However, months later when the restaurant reopened for in-person dining, Smith gave them a second replica he’d built — something he says he rarely does. With his wall of organized lego bricks , Lego artist Ben Smith works on his recreations of neighborhood buildings at his North Park home on Wednesday, July 20.Two years — and tens of thousands of dollars worth of Legos — after he began building, Smith has created dozens of impressive builds and an even more impressive sorting system, with hundreds of storage bins lining the wall of his at-home workspace, each full of little Lego bricks color-coded by the rainbow.

And as time passed, Smith has delved deeper into each build, making each more detailed than the last. While the skeleton of the building only takes him a couple of days to construct, adding all the details — from the landscaping and accessories down to the custom Photoshopped signage and logos — can take him about a week. “Adding, like, the graffiti to the dumpster outside and some empty boxes are the bits that I really have fun doing,” Smith said. The Bluefoot Bar and Lounge by Lego artist Ben Smith at his North Park home on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.
