‘Blue wall’ Tories under threat from the Lib Dems in the south see winning back liberal voters as key to keeping their seats, which means they think they'll be doomed to defeat if she becomes PM, writes katyballs
This week the Truss campaign had a victory: Project Switch. After weeks of rumours of a defection between the two leadership camps, they convinced two MPs to transfer their allegiance from Team Rishi to Team Liz – Robert Buckland and Chris Skidmore.
One of the reasons Sunak won more endorsements from the party than any other candidate in the parliamentary rounds is that plenty of MPs adopted an “anyone but Truss” approach. It’s not just that plenty of the MPs backing Sunak – from deputy prime minister Dominic Raab to One Nation chair Damien Green – remain loyal to his campaign. They view the prospect of“We know there are a group of MPs who will never ever get behind us,” says a member of Truss’s campaign. “They viscerally dislike her.
It’s in these areas that Johnson became the most toxic in the final months of his premiership – with Ed Davey’s party overturning sizeable Tory majorities in by-elections in Chesham and Amersham, North Shropshire and Tiverton and Honiton. Already MPs on the ground say his resignation has seen some of the “vitriol” go from the doorstep.and a true-blue manifesto could fall short when it comes to what they need to win these voters back.
Ultimately MPs in seats such as Raab’s view winning back liberal voters as key to keeping their seats. They worry this could be impossible under Truss if her economic plans misfire and mortgage rates spike or her rhetoric isolates swing voters.
