In season 5 of the royal drama, the Prime Minister plays 'umpire' for the Prince and Princess of Wales

should come with a “this is a fictionalised version of events” warning or not , episode nine seems to be where the series five really takes a giant leap away from reality.

According to Peter Morgan’s view of the mid-’90s, Prime Minister John Major was juggling more than just the British electorate needs, and was frequently called in by the royal family with their own agendas and dilemmas to sort through.

Around this time, Major did actually find the time from his day job running the UK to try and help Charles and Diana through the treacherous waters of their union. And according to Anthony Seldon, Major’s biographer and author of, he did offer help, but “any support and guidance Major could offer was to no avail. After it was clear that the marriage was unsustainable, his prime concern became the constitutional position.

It was Major, as prime minister, who went on to officially announce the separation on December 9 in the House of Commons and said: “It is announced from Buckingham Palace that, with regret, the Prince and Princess of Wales have decided to separate. Their Royal Highnesses have no plans to divorce and their constitutional positions are unaffected. This decision has been reached amicably, and they will both continue to participate fully in the upbringing of their children.

He added, after assuring the public and the MPs that there would be no change to the constitution: “I am sure that I speak for the whole House – and millions beyond it – in offering our support to both the Prince and Princess of Wales… I know that there will be great sadness at this news.
