The caves were used for all sorts of purposes beneath the city centre
From caves under pubs as beer cellars to others used as post offices, there was once a whole range of uses for the caves that lie beneath Nottingham. It is well known that some of these caves were once used as homes, but some were also used as workspaces, to make things like candles, or to isolate people.
On Bridlesmith Gate there is a cave that is believed to have been used as a forge, with a large chimney with lots of soot and a narrow chimney that would stop rain from falling onto the fire. Nottingham's first brewery, the Simpsons Brewery, also used part of the cave networks.
