The Irish Mirror chatted to The David Bowie Festival director John Brereton about the Starman's legacy and Irish connections ahead of the festival's 10th anniversary this week
For a decade, The Dublin David Bowie Festival has kept the Starman’s spirit alive, and now organisers are promising the “biggest year yet”.
Dublin’s David Bowie festival has been going for a decade now, launching on January 9, 2016 as a small weekend event in the capital to celebrate the career of the Ziggy Stardust icon. “I was getting a bit giddy, ‘This would be great if David hears about it’. “Then I was woken up the next morning by my son, who said, ‘Dad, David Bowie’s dead, you’ll never believe it'. It was just weird after having a thing in commemoration that he died like a few hours later.
John says the Starman songwriter had a great affinity for the Irish people, owing to a collective sense of humour. Bowie Fest brings in around 15,000 people from both Ireland and abroad, all without any sponsorship or council support, with “passionate fans” keeping the decade-long festival running. The festival director says this year is poised to be the “biggest year yet” after Covid hampered some of the larger line-ups planned in recent years.
