Packed with intricate sketches and detailed notes, Leonardo's personal diaries reveal his countless passions—from the structures of human anatomy to the possibilities of human flight
“Five Grotesque Heads,”ca 1495. Gallerie dell’Accademia, VeniceLeonardo early on displayed a penchant for depicting the grotesque—basically, ugly people. He was obsessed with juxtaposing what he called bruttezza as a counterpoint to bellezza ; one exemplified the other. He always had a notebook handy to sketch faces in the crowd. In the late 1480s and early 1490s, he made many exotic, fantastic, and ugly drawings of men, women, and animals.
The engineering for this gilded copper ball, completed during his apprenticeship with artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence, made a lasting impact on Leonardo da Vinci.
