Due to high demand, the borough has made a temporary partnership with Green Star of the Interior for recycling electronics and aluminum.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On July 1, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Central Recycling Facility closed as the borough faced issues in replacing the operator after the contract ended.

“At the end of fiscal year 22, the last recycling contract ended. A new contractor had been selected but that contractor and the borough could not come to an agreement on the new contract,” said Matt Pearson, FNSB recycling manager. After the request for proposal concludes, the borough will evaluate the presented proposals and eventually a new contract will be signed. Then the recycling facility will be able to return to normal operations.Prior to the closure, the facility saw a daily average of approximately 120 customers and three commercial customers. This made a total of 649 tons of recycled material in the last fiscal year. The electronics portion of that total made up 123 tons or just under 20 percent.

“While the CRF is not able to accept electronic waste here at the facility we modified the Green Star of Interior Alaska contract to allow them to accept electronics at their facility at 2134 Texaco Avenue.”
