Ireland players from past underage teams will be all too familiar with some of the players in Sunday night’s Euro 2024 decider
Ireland has tended to punch well above its weight at underage international level - from Brian Kerr ’s 1997 World Youth Cup bronze medal finish to his European Championships double in 1998, and to European Under-19 semi-final appearances in 2011 and 2019.
There, they faced a star-studded Spain, where Paul Doolin’s side suffered a thumping 5-0 defeat. Two members of that Spanish side, which won the tournament, have starred in Euro 2024. After their resounding win against Paul Doolin’s Irish side, the Spanish went on to beat the Czech Republic 3-2 after extra-time in the decider. Southampton striker Adam Armstrong, meanwhile, did make it to Under-21 level on the international stage.
