Michael Masi caused huge controversy in last year's season-ending showdown, basically denying the Briton another global crown with a decision later described as 'human error'THE FORMULA 1 race director that cost Sir Lewis Hamilton an eighth world title has resigned. Michael Masi has walked away from the The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile , seven months after his error in Abu Dhabi cost Hamilton the 2021 title.
Masi was the race director for the 2021 F1 season, but caused huge controversy in the season-ending showdown, basically denying the Briton another global crown with a decision later described as ‘human error’ by FIA chiefs. During the final race of the 2021 campaign, Masi was under pressure from both the Mercedes and Red Bull teams to make decisions in their favour as Hamilton and Max Verstappen looked to land the world title. Masi’s Safety Car decisions allowed Verstappen to pass Hamilton for a controversial race and title win.Direct communication between teams has subsequently been removed as Masi lost his position as and race director.
The sport’s governing body, the FIA now under the presidency of Mohammed Ben Sulayem, confirmed a number of structural changes as part of a ‘step forward for Formula 1 refereeing’, one being that Niels Wittich, former DTM race director, and Eduardo Freitas, WEC race director, will act alternatively as F1’s race director.
