With the goverment moving ahead with the asylum camp plans at RAF Scampton, Hamish writes that we must not lose hope

We’ve had another tough week of RAF Scampton news: the Prime Minister now claims that Scampton will be in use from August, but only for 200 people. Despite finding thousands of new spaces in hotels for asylum seekers, the PM still thinks it’s sensible to cost Lincoln and Scampton £300mn of investment and thousands of jobs for fewer people than could fit in one hotel.

What the £300 million of investment in Scampton represents is a renewed confidence in the city and its surrounding areas. The private sector can see an opportunity here: at Lincoln University’s Science and Innovation Park in buildings named for George Boole, Lincoln’s son of a shoemaker who invented the Boolean algebra which powers the internet. In those buildings there are a range of high-tech companies helping reshape Lincoln’s economic future.
