Jim Gavin's Football Review Committee (FRC), featuring James Horan, Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Michael Murphy .have organised trial games at Croke Park where a raft of experimental rules will be put to the test live on RTE and TG4.
Jim Gavin believes Gaelic football fans will be impressed when they see the new experimental rule changes go on display in the interprovincial series in eight days’ time.
The rules, which also include having to keep three men in the opposition half at all times and a one player throw in, will be trialled the weekend after next in four interprovincial games screened live on RTE and TG4. “Specifically, we are looking at Gaelic football. When we get all the stakeholder engagement, over 7000 letters, emails to Croke Park for our attention, people in general say the game is in a good space.
“We believe, and our strategy is, to show these games in a very meaningful way, a very public way. We have been very transparent in our engagement and process as a Football Review Committee. This would see a mark only awarded when the ball is kicked from outside the 45 metre line inside the 20 metre line, and would allow players to continue playing, with the game brought back for a free kick if no advantage occurs.“Conceptually, if one isn’t involved at a coaching level you might struggle with some of them and the way the rule book is written. The laws of our game can be quite difficult to understand.
