A familiar aroma hit straight away

What's meaty, topped with golden pastry, and green? Anywhere else but Nottingham that would be classed as a mouldy pie. But here, in the city where mushy peas are considered a delicacy, this is a speciality.

However, the pie can't be bought at the home of the fair, Forest Recreation Ground. It requires a trip to Carlton shop, Project Pies. Baker Dan Lione. Taking advantage of the two-hours' free parking off Standhill Road at the back of the shop, I get there just as the shop on Carlton Hill opens at 10am.It's tricky to chat to Dan because as soon as one customer leaves, there's another, then another.

I can't wait for dinner time to come round. I heat the pie in an air fryer - a genius invention. It takes around 20 minutes for it to be piping hot. As I cut into the pie, that familiar aroma of mushy peas hits me straight away.
