A truly beautiful spot
A gorgeous park with its own aviary and lake on the doorstep of Lancashire has been ranked among the UK’s top parks and green spaces.
For anyone who’s feeling a tad peckish, there’s also a tempting cafe and gift shop, popular with residents and visitors alike, offering homemade food, mouthwatering snacks and unusual gifts. The Grade II Listed site, according to Historic England, has three gorgeous entrances. The main one on Botanic Road is a stunning sight, flanked by a pair of lodges dating back to 1875, and was the sole entrance in the early days before the addition of ornamental iron gates on Bankfield Lane and a further entrance at the north end of the park.Meanwhile, the main buildings date back to 1876, and contain a cafe, gift shop and conservatory.
Similarly, Sunshine Sukie commented: “I’ve been visiting the Botanic Gardens my whole life. My Mum would take us as kids in our pram and I’ve grown up using the park as a resource for studies - plants, birds and when it was still there, the museum. Now as an adult it’s a little bit of heaven, an oasis on a busy day. You can take a picnic and sit under a tree next to the lake, have a chilled beer in the bar or simply just wander in the dappled sunlight under the trees.
Southport MP Damien Moore said: “It’s fantastic news that the Botanic Gardens are on the short list of the UK’s top parks and green spaces. These gardens truly are the jewel in our town’s crown, and this competition represents such a wonderful opportunity for the dedicated volunteers who do so much to look after this fantastic green space to be recognised for their amazing work.
