'Complaining about the Grammys not honoring the best rock artists is like getting mad at your toaster for not being a refrigerator,' says critic Steven Hyden. “It's an industry award.”

Rock fans say the Grammys don’t get one of music’s biggest genres: rock.

Fans, especially lovers of heavier music such as hard rock and metal, have had a problem with the awards since at least 1989. That is when thrash-metal pioneers Metallica lost an award—the category now called best metal performance—to Jethro Tull, a 1970s act whose music incorporates the flute. Their irritation has only grown in recent years as the awards have put more emphasis on pop, hip-hop and R&B.
