Voters in Stalybridge and Hyde aren't expecting a change - but some aren't happy
The two Tameside towns are 'staunch Labour' - as described by one voter - and have elected their current MP Jonathan Reynolds in each election since 2010. And as voters prepare to go to the polls in exactly one month, every single voter the Manchester Evening News spoke to said they don't expect anything to change on July 4.
'I know it'll all be the same' Dorothy Powell, 88, has lived in Stalybridge her whole life. She said she liked current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and sees him as 'more trustworthy' than Labour leader Keir Starmer. However, Dorothy said she didn't think she would be voting in the upcoming election. "People say to me 'oh you should vote', but I think you've got a right to not vote if you don't want to," she said.Out walking next to the canal, 85-year-old Patrick Carey said he usually votes Labour, and he will again in the upcoming election.
"When you look here, you have a few carparks and everyone always says 'oh it's great because we've got Tesco's', but Tesco's is actually a private car park owned by a private company. At any moment they could decide to charge for it, and that would massively impact our business. 'He knows the area, he knows people' Cynthia Riley, 67, spoke to the M.E.N while out shopping in Stalybridge. A dual American and British citizen, she said she would vote for Jonathan Reynolds after he helped her obtain her citizenship many years ago.
"Well you can see what this is like," he said, gesturing to the thinly populated market. "We've had what, 60 or 70 years of Labour, and what have they done? Absolutely nothing.
