We look ahead to all of the must-see gigs taking place across Ireland in the week ahead

There's a slew of high-profile gigs taking place around Ireland over the coming days, including a new two-day mini-festival, the return of famed Irish live act Fight Like Apes and a show from Manchester United legend Eric Cantona .Ireland's underground and experimental music scene has been having a big moment over the last few years, edging out of DIY art spaces and into bigger festivals and even the National Concert Hall.

It features everything from the weightless techno of Barker, to the EBM noise of Autumns, Asa Nisi Masa’s frantic breaks, folk from Ellie O’Neilland ambient synth mastery from Oval Orbs. In that decade they became one of Ireland’s most loved bands on record and live — punky, catchy indie-electro shot through with sarky humour.

They initially called time back in 2018 for familiar reasons — another Irish band crushed by an unforgiving scene, worn out financially. In their farewell Facebook message, they said: “Stick a fork in us, we’re done”. They backed it up with a wildly energetic live show too — from their sharp-suited presentation to frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist’s acrobatic antics.

If anything, the album is a rebirth of their raw sound, and evidence that they haven’t matured any — it opens with a song called Bogus Operandi. Her half-shrugged deadpan speak- singing is the perfect counterpoint to the band’s jagged post-punk and noisy psychedelia, channelling the likes of The Fall, Wire and Stereolab.
